What is love? What does it mean to truly love others? And most importantly, what does it mean to love God?
I’ve been asking God these questions recently, especially what it means to love Him.
I love God. I genuinely think I do. But as the scripture says;
“These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me .” Matthew 15:8
We do not know our hearts. That’s why it’s very important to ask God to reveal it to us, and that’s why it’s scary to think that I may say love God, but I don’t truly love Him.
This fear has led me to do a Bible study😂.
Love is God, and God is Love. In its full essence. He is the persona of love. So what does it mean to love Love?
“Jesus answered and said to him, ‘If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word…’” John 14:23
To love God means to keep His commandments. That is one litmus test you can use to check if you do love God. Do you obey His word and keep His commandments?
But that isn’t the litmus test I want to focus on.
The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my sheep."[1]
“As I have loved you, you also love one another. By this, all will know that you are my disciples.”[2]
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” [3]
John 21:17 [1], John 13:35 [2], Mark 12:30-31 [3]
If you love me, feed my sheep. Loving one another is how others will see that you are truly my disciples. Love your neighbor as yourself. (summary)
Loving God is loving others.
Hurting others is hurting God, because they are God’s children, too. What parent is happy when his/her child is hurt?
That’s why loving others is the second litmus test to show that you love God.
The only way we can understand how to truly Love, is by understanding what and who Love is, and 1 Corinthians 13 is the perfect summary.
In this series, I’ll be sharing what I understand about love, characteristic by characteristic, from 1 Corinthians 13.
My desire is that you & I have an understanding of how to love others as God loves, because loving genuinely is one of the most liberating feelings in the whole world. And I pray it stays in our hearts.
Stay tuned for episode 1! If you’re joining me in this series, please say hi in the comment section!
